NASA astronaut explains cause of helmet leak that aborted spacewalk

US Astronaut Chris Cassidy explains in a video how a faulty cooling system was to blame for the helmet leak that abruptly ended a spacewalk outside the International Space Station two weeks ago.

Two weeks after NASA aborted a spacewalk outside the International Space Station when up to 1.5 liters of ?funny-tasting? water leaked into Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano?s helmet, Maj. Parmitano?s spacewalk partner has released a video explaining what caused the leak that morning.

Cassidy demonstrated the suit and discussed some of the troubleshooting activities to identify the problem that caused water intrusion in Parmitano's helmet during a spacewalk conducted by the two astronauts on July 16.

The spacewalk on the morning of July 16?was aborted 92 minutes into what was supposed to be a more than six-hour mission, after water began accumulating in Parmitano?s helmet from a then-unknown source. By the time that Parmitano was helped back into the ISS, about 1 to 1.5 liters of water had formed globs in the helmet, such that he could not hear, speak, or see.

In the video, US astronaut Chris Cassidy, explains from on-board the ISS that the water originated in the suit's cooling system and leaked into the ventilation system. Holding Parmitano?s helmet, Cmdr. Cassidy shows its white plastic back where the water began to seep in as a giant bubble. The water then flowed to fill in the astronaut?s ears and then came around to the front of the helmet to leak into his eyes, nose, and mouth, Cassidy explains.

?If it had continued to leak much more, it would have been really serious,? he says, adding that NASA engineers are still investigating what went wrong with Parmitano?s cooling system.

NASA officials had almost immediately pinpointed the spacesuit?s cooling system as the origin of the water, ruling out the 32-ounce drinking-water bag. The cooling system holds about a gallon of water tinged with iodine to prevent bacteria buildup. The iodine could explain the ?funny? water taste that Parmitano had reported, NASA officials said at a conference held just after the incident.

?We have not seen a problem like this before,? said Karina Eversley, a NASA spacewalk officer, at the time, adding that drowning or choking was a real possibility had the mission not been expediently terminated. ?This was a very serious issue.?

The scheduled walk was the second of two that the astronaut pair had planned to make outside the space station. The two astronauts had spent six hours and seven minutes outside a week earlier to make repairs on the station and to prepare it for a Russian module to dock there and had planned to finish the remaining work the July 16th?walk.

Parmitano was wearing the same suit on the aborted walk that he wore during the previous walk, which went as planned.

'The Muppets' James Bobin in early talks to direct Johnny Depp in 'Alice in Wonderland 2'

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - James Bobin is in early talks to direct "Alice in Wonderland 2" for Disney and producer Joe Roth, according to two individuals with knowledge of the deal. Johnny Depp would also return to star as the Mad Hatter, although that has not been explicitly announced.

Bobin already oversees another franchise for Disney, albeit a smaller one, in "The Muppets." He directed the first film, which was a big hit in 2011, and is currently wrapping up the second one, which will open in theaters next year.

The individuals stressed that the talks were in early stages and that Bobin had not yet met with the producers, but a meeting with Depp comes first.

In "Alice," he would inherit one of Disney's most grandiose film properties. Director Tim Burton, Depp and producer Joe Roth reimagined Lewis Carroll's iconic tale in a lavish, 3D 2010 film. Their take on the story of a girl who gets sucked into a fantasy world grossed more than $1 billion across the globe.

Though some contest whether "Alice" is truly a kid's tale, the success of that film spawned a rush of revisionist classic kids' tales, including two new Snow White movies, a "Hansel & Gretel" film and "Jack the Giant Slayer."

Linda Woolverton, who wrote the first "Alice" for Roth, has been working on a script for the second. Burton will not return, and though Depp has not officially signed on, it's hard to imagine Disney making another film without him. Disney declined comment.

Depp is already signed on to reprise his role in another major Disney franchise, playing Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean 5." He also just dropped out of "Black Mass," a biopic of famed Boston mobster Whitey Bulger. Depp would have played Bulger.

He is currently filming "Transcendence" for Oscar-wining cinematographer turned director Wally Pfister and will soon grace screens in "The Lone Ranger."

Bobin, who has also worked in TV on "Flight of the Conchords" and "Da Ali G Show," has no firm commitment to a film after "The Muppets...Again!"

Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd would produce.

Glencore says three South Africa chrome mines hit by wildcat strikes

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Glencore Xstrata Plc said on Thursday three of its chrome mines in South Africa were at a standstill after up to 1,500 workers embarked on an illegal strike this week.

The dispute at the mines near Steelpoort, northeast of Johannesburg in the Limpopo province, adds to long-running friction in the mining industry that has caused production to slow, raised concerns about Africa's largest economy and sent the rand to new four-year lows.

"The strike started on Tuesday and all three mines are not in operation," said Glencore Xstrata chrome spokesman Christopher Tsatsawane. "We have dismissed 200 employees at Helena mine after they failed to return to work after three ultimatums."

He said more employees could be dismissed. Final ultimatums were yet to be issued to strikers at its Magareng and Thorncliffe mines.

Tsatsawane said the workers, most of whom belong to the militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), had stopped work in solidarity with an individual who claims he was assaulted by a shift supervisor.

Dismissal of workers is not likely to go down well with trade unions, already embroiled in a turf war and on the brink of biennial wage negotiations.

South Africa, home to around 75 percent of the world's chromite reserves, has become a flashpoint of violent labor strife as AMCU and the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) battle for members.

Applications for US unemployment aid rise to 354K

(AP) ? The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose 10,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 354,000. Still, the level of applications is consistent with steady hiring and remains near a five-year low.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications increased from a revised 344,000 the previous week, slightly higher than the 340,000 initially reported.

The gains pushed the less volatile four-week average up 6,750 to 347,250, the third straight increase.

Weekly applications are a proxy for layoffs. They have fallen nearly 7 percent since November and touched a five-year low of 338,000 earlier this month.

The decline in applications for unemployment aid has coincided with solid hiring. In the past six months, employers have added an average of 208,000 jobs a month. That's up from an average of only 138,000 in the previous six months.

The unemployment rate has fallen to a four-year low of 7.5 percent, down from 10 percent in October 2009. The drop in unemployment has occurred, in part, because many people have given up looking for work. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively searching for a job.

"We can't make too many inferences from one week's results but the trend, overall, still points to improving labor markets," said Jennifer Lee, an economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Five states were unable to report complete data to the Labor Department, a spokesman said, because of the Memorial Day holiday earlier this week. The department estimated figures for those five states. That could mean that last week's figure will be revised more than usual next week when the final data is received.

Nearly 4.6 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits the week that ended May 11, the latest data available. That's down 25 percent from 6.1 million a year earlier.

A separate report Thursday showed that the economy expanded at a 2.4 percent annual pace in the first three months of the year. That was slightly below an earlier estimate of 2.5 percent but much better than the 0.4 percent pace in the final three months of last year.

Economists expect growth will slow to about 2 percent in the current quarter, as businesses and consumers adjust to tax increases that took effect at the beginning of the year and federal government spending cuts that kicked in March 1.

Two reports this week suggested that the economy is still expanding at a steady pace. Home prices are surging and consumers are more confident. Both trends could encourage more spending in the coming months, providing crucial support for growth.

Consumer confidence jumped in May to the highest level in five years, the Conference Board said Tuesday. Soaring stock prices and Americans' brighter outlook on the job market helped drive the gain.

Home prices jumped nearly 11 percent in March from a year earlier, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index, also released Tuesday. That is the biggest gain in seven years.

Higher prices increase homeowners' net worth, which makes them more likely to spend. They can also sustain the housing recovery, by encouraging more would-be buyers to purchase homes before prices rise further.

More buyers are bidding on a tight supply of homes. That's encouraged builders to step up construction, which creates more jobs. Applications for building permits rose to the highest level in five years in April.

The brightening economic picture has raised speculation that the Federal Reserve would dial back its $85 billion a month bond-buying program. The purchases are intended to lower long-term interest rates and encourage more borrowing and spending.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress last week that it was too early to wind down the program. Fed policymakers have said they will continue the purchases until there is substantial improvement in employment.

Family 'cluster' shows MERS virus follows odd pattern - Vitals

By Maggie Fox, Senior Writer, NBC News

The grandfather got sick first, developing a fever, achiness, diarrhea and other vague but serious symptoms. Within a month, three male relatives were sick, too, with what?s been dubbed the MERS coronavirus. Two of the four men died.

The family?s case, described in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows some of the mysteries that public health officials are trying to solve as they grapple with the deadly new virus, which has killed more than half of its 49 known victims.? Where did it come from? And why does it so rarely pass from one person to another?

Wives, mothers and sisters all cared for the four men as they battled the infection, but none of them got ill. ?Nor did any of the hospital workers who treated the patients -- even though they did not know at the time to take special precautions.

The family all lived in Riyadh, a big city, in a family compound of sorts. None had traveled much -- the first patient and two of his sons had gone to neighboring Bahrain six months before. The grandfather, aged 70, had a range of health complaints that made him vulnerable, including diabetes and high blood pressure.

He first started feeling ill on October 5, Dr. Ziad Memish of Al-Faisal University in Riyadh and colleagues report.

A week later he was in the hospital. Doctors had no idea they were dealing with a never-before-seen virus and barraged him with antibiotics. His 39-year-old son tended to him faithfully, doctors said, staying by his bedside for days. The patient, who is not named in the report, ended up on a ventilator and died October 23.

Five days later, the son showed up in the emergency room with a fever and coughing up blood. In October, a doctor?s first thought is when patients show up coughing, so he was treated with antiviral medications for influenza. It turns out these drugs are useless against the MERS coronavirus and the son died on November 2.

This man?s 16-year-old son become ill next and was admitted to the hospital on November 7. Doctors still had no clue about what they were dealing with, treated him with antivirals and antibiotics, and the teenager survived. His uncle -- son of the first patient -- also got sick and was hospitalized and also survived.

MERS is a relative of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus that spread globally from China in 2003, killed 775 people and infected close to 800 before it was stopped. It was eventually traced to an animal called a civet, a delicacy in China.

Scientists suspect MERS also comes from an animal, but they haven?t been able to find the source yet. SARS spread in what are known as clusters in which certain people seemed to be far more infectious than others. These ?superspreaders? infected groups of health care workers or others they came into contact with.

MERS also appears to cause occasional clusters. A patient in France who died this week infected a person who shared his hospital room, and another so-called family cluster has been reported from Saudi Arabia.

In the case reported Wednesday, 28 family members lived in a large house divided into apartments in Riyadh.

?Aside from the four patients included in this report, no other family members had major respiratory symptoms or illness from September 2012 through April 2013,? Memish?s team wrote.

?This home is flanked by similar buildings on either side and is remote from any rural enterprises. There were no domestic animals in the immediate vicinity of the home, and the family did not keep pets. The only animal exposure occurred with Patient 4, who attended the slaughtering of a camel on October 24. No one had traveled out of Riyadh in the previous three months. ?

When new diseases emerge, experts want to know every detail of how people lived and may have infected one another. This tells them whether am infection can pass casually, through the air, or whether close and intense contact is needed.

Right now, global health officials have warned hospitals to keep a close eye out for someone who might be infected with MERS. They?re told to take special, strict precautions in treating such a patient: wearing gowns, masks and gloves. Patients need to be kept isolated, so they don?t infect others. There?s no vaccine against MERS and no treatment, other than what?s called supportive care.

Everyone diagnosed so far has either lived in the Middle East, or traveled there recently.

The Riyadh family lived as many Saudi families do, Memish and colleagues reported. ?All adult and adolescent male family members shared meals together and ate separately from female relations and their young children. The men also socialized and visited the local mosque together,? they wrote.

?After the onset of illness and before hospital admissions, each patient was cared for at home by family members; wives were the primary caregivers for the married men, and 16-year-old Patient 3 was cared for by his mother and sisters.?

But all these women stayed well, Memish reported. And none of the 24 health care workers who tended to the four sick men became infected.

So why weren?t any of the women in this particular family infected? The researchers don?t know. The good news, they say, is that MERS does not appear to be as easily transmitted as SARS was. But another study published Wednesday shows the incubation period may be as long as 12 days, meaning doctors will have to carefully watch anyone who comes into contact with a MERS patient.

Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson from "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo."

It's a tough time for the family from TLC's hit series, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo." Over the past few days, they've weathered a mysterious health emergency and the loss of a beloved pet.

The woes started last Friday evening, when dad Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson collapsed and was taken to the hospital. According to posts on the official Honey Boo Boo Facebook fan page, which is run by "Mama" June Shannon and a family friend, Sugar Bear underwent "a lot of tests on his brain" and the family feared it could be "very serious." Recent posts on both their Facebook and Twitter accounts added the hashtag "#prayforsugarbear."

But in the midst of the crisis, things got even worse for the reality TV stars from McIntyre, Ga.

While Thompson remained at the hospital, they discovered that the family dog, a Chihuahua named China they'd rescued six years earlier, had been "hit and left to die."

"(She was) still spasming as they found her," one Facebook post explained. "We think it may have been done intentionally cause of where she was found."

As for Thompson, the latest updates indicate there's been no change in his condition. The cause of his collapse is still a mystery.

The incident is just the latest in a long list of medical emergencies for the family patriarch in recent months. Last September, he was hospitalized due to a foot infection following a "mud-boggin'" accident. Then, in December, an ambulance was called after he fell ill during a toy drive. And just three months ago, he was hospitalized again after a bout of pancreatitis.

TODAY.com reached out to TLC about the family's troubles. The network had no comment.

"Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" returns with new episodes starting July 17.
